Practice for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Trauma TherapyProf. DDr. Johannes Kappes

A person cannot be divided

Body and mind belong together. That is the idea that underpins our practice: anyone who treats mental health problems has to see the whole person – their history, their body, their life. The practice is led by Prof. DDr. Johannes Kappes, specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy. His path explains how this approach came about.

The career of Prof. DDr. Kappes

He was a physician before he became a psychiatrist. After studying biochemistry and medicine, his path led him through microbiology, general medicine and surgery to forensic psychiatry, with doctorates in microbiology and forensic psychiatry. There, at the boundary between body, law and mind, he chose psychiatry because he wanted to help people with his experience from medicine. He then completed his specialist training in psychiatry and psychotherapy in Zurich.

What he brought with him from the other disciplines still shapes his work today: anyone who knows the body asks different questions before making a diagnosis.

Why the effects of trauma

Almost everyone experiences something in the course of their life that hurts them. This hurt can be treated, not just named – so that a life without this loss becomes possible again. That is why the practice concentrates on the effects of trauma.

At the same time, it is work that calls for sensitivity and a broad repertoire of methods. That is exactly what the methods Prof. DDr. Kappes is trained in are for, and that is exactly why every treatment with us begins with the whole picture.

Treatment approach and the IMPA

Before a diagnosis is made in our practice, we ask about everything that belongs to it: previous illnesses, medication, family risks, physical findings. Only then do we come to the symptoms. Mental health problems are rarely purely psychological, and a treatment that overlooks this falls short.

This approach gave rise to the IMPA, the Institute for Mental and Physical Ambition, founded by Prof. DDr. Kappes in Zurich in 2019. There, as here, we combine psychiatric treatment, diagnosis and our own research.
